If you've chosen not to go for the Creative Cloud, you may be looking to get to grips with Photoshop Elements.
As we have said elsewhere in this site we use Lightroom for most of our editing, but you do need Photoshop for things like layers, and filters (These days we use the Creative Cloud, but we are familiar with elements and this book). This book is pretty good on using layers, which we do use quite a lot. Knowing about layers opens up a whole heap of new fun in editing. We highly recommend you have a play around with them! They may sound complicated at first, but once you've figured it out it really is great. From memory this book describes layers as adding several sheets of acetate on top of your original picture and writing on each one. We think that's a pretty darn good explanation... We like the simple things in life...
